MOSCOW, August 1 (RIA Novosti) - A young giraffe has died from head trauma while being transported in a truck along highway in South Africa August 1, AFP reports. According to witness accounts, the blindfolded animal, one of two giraffes in the vehicle, hit a bridge.
"Two giraffes were being transported by road... one of the giraffes had an incident. We are not quite sure what happened, but we got unconfirmed reports that it hit its head on a bridge," Rick Allan from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals told AFP.
Criminal charges could be brought against the driver responsible for the safety of the animals who allegedly transported the giraffe in a truck not fit for that purpose. "Our investigations so far showed that the transport used was inadequate and incorrect," Allan stated.
The incident occurred on the highway between Pretoria and Johannesburg.
