WARSAW, August 2 (RIA Novosti) – Poland has evacuated diplomats from its Libyan embassy because of the security concerns, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said on Saturday.
“All Polish diplomats left Tripoli and went back to Poland,” he said.
According to Poland’s top diplomat, “taking into account the insecure situation in Libya, the decision was made to close Poland’s embassy in Tripoli and to evacuate the diplomats and nationals.”
Sikorski also added that Poland’s planes had evacuated 24 citizens of Poland, six Slovaks and two Lithuanians.
In late July, a number of countries, including China, Greece, France, Germany, the Netherlands, the United States and Egypt, started evacuating their nationals from Libya over the security threat.
Libya has been in a political turmoil since 2011, following the overthrow of country’s long-standing leader Muammar Gaddafi. The clashes between a large number of armed groups are ongoing in the country, taking over the whole districts. The militants possess a significant arsenal of weapons, including heavy warfare that was seized from the government forces during the 2011 uprising.
The latest reports suggest that since mid-July 102 people died and 452 were injured in Libya’s capital Tripoli as a result of violent clashes. In the same period of time, 77 people were killed and 289 injured in Benghazi, Libya’s second largest city.
