MOSCOW, August 5 (RIA Novosti) - Central African Republic’s (CAR) Prime Minister Andre Nzapayeke and his Cabinet have stepped down late Thursday following the president’s demand, Reuters reported citing local radio station.

“The head of state asked for and obtained the resignation of the Prime Minister Andre Nzapayeke and his government," a spokesman for President Catherine Samba-Panza was quoted as saying said on state radio.

A new premier has not been named yet.

The situation in the republic escalated in December 2013, when clashes between Islamist militants from Seleka rebel group and Christian activists confronting them swept Bangui.

According to UN estimates, up to one million people were forced to flee their homes with over a thousand being killed since the conflict started.

In late July, the UN Security Council issued a statement welcoming the signing of a cessation of hostilities and violence agreement between armed groups in the Central African Republic.

The UN is set to become responsible for peacekeeping in the Central African Republic on September 15, replacing the African Union force which is currently in the country.

Earlier, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon recommended deploying 10,000 servicemen and over 1.8 policemen to CAR in order to reestablish order in the country. Around two thousand French troops and six thousand African peacekeepers are currently helping to maintain security in the republic.
