NEW YORK, August 5 (RIA Novosti) – A man who has been tested for the Ebola virus after returning to the United States from West Africa is “in isolation,” but “in good spirits,” a spokesman for Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City told RIA Novosti Tuesday.
“The patient, who remains in isolation, was stable overnight and in good spirits. No other patients have presented with similar symptoms and travel history to West Africa,” the spokesman told RIA Novosti. “We will continue to work closely with federal, state and city health officials to address and monitor this case, keep the community informed and provide the best quality care to all of our patients.”
The man arrived at the emergency room on Monday with a fever and a stomach ache. Test specimens were sent to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, and the results are expected within 48 hours, the spokesman said.
Two other Americans – Nancy Writebol, 59, a Christian missionary to Liberia, and Kent Brantly, 33, an Ebola-infected doctor – are being treated for the fever at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.
More than 1,300 people have been infected and 887 killed in the worst Ebola outbreak in history and the first to have occurred in West Africa. It began in southern Guinea in February and spread to Liberia and Sierra Leone.
