NEW YORK, August 5 (RIA Novosti) – Russian student Katie Nikolaeva will begin a 10-day railroad research trip across the United States on Thursday after winning a spot on the so-called Millennial Trains Project (MTP).
“I’m really excited. It’s about seeing the real America – not just New York, but cities in the middle of the country,” Nikolaeva, 25, told RIA Novosti. “I hope to learn a lot from the other young scholars who have really interesting study goals for the trip.”
The journey begins in Portland with stops in Seattle, Whitefish, St Paul, Milwaukee and Chicago before ending in New York City. Other selected students come from Indonesia, Colombia, Yemen and Pakistan.
Nikolaeva, a Muscovite who is studying economics at Brandeis University in Boston, says she will carry out research in small business re-invigorating the economies of declining industrial US cities during the cross-country trip.
The Millennial Trains Project is a non-profit organization that leads crowd-funded transcontinental train journeys that empower diverse groups of creative, entrepreneurial, and civic-minded Millennials to explore America's new frontiers.
