MOSCOW, August 6 (RIA Novosti) - A joint investigation involving Russian and Uruguayan police led to the seizure of more than 70 kilograms (154 pounds) of drugs, Russia's Federal Drug Control Service head Viktor Ivanov said Wednesday.
"I would like to note that a big operation was carried out in [Russia’s] St. Petersburg recently. A criminal organization, involved in trafficking cocaine from Montevideo to St. Petersburg, was arrested. We seized 12 kilograms of cocaine, 60 kilograms of Moroccan hashish and also synthetic drugs," Ivanov said.
According to preliminary data, the criminals smuggled about a third of a ton of cocaine from Latin America through Sao Paulo and Frankfurt to Russia annually, the official said.
