MOSCOW, August 7 (RIA Novosti) - Russia’s children’s rights ombudsman Pavel Astakhov and Russia’s Ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin called on the UN Security Council to discuss the situation in eastern Ukraine, where at least 120 children have been killed.
“Kiev describes as ‘kidnapping’ any attempts or calls to move out the least protected orphans from the area that is shelled and bombed. In the meantime, the killing of more than 120 children in the area of the anti-terrorist operation is seen as ‘liberation,’” Astakhov wrote in his Instagram account Thursday. “We believe it is essential that the issue is discussed by the UN Security Council.”
During the UNSC meeting, Astakhov and Churkin also discussed Ukraine’s claims that Russia is involved into international kidnapping of Ukrainian kids.
In mid-April, Kiev launched a military crackdown on independence supporters in eastern Ukraine. According to a UN report released in late July, the conflict has claimed the lives of 1,129 civilians, with another 3,442 injured.
Russia is currently sheltering over 730,000 people who have fled Ukraine since the start of the conflict between government forces and independence supporters
