MOSCOW, August 7 (RIA Novosti) - The new genetically modified herbicide-tolerant cotton and soybean plants pose no danger and could soon be approved, the US Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) states.
"It is an important step in the regulatory process and we are encouraging farmers to urge APHIS to complete this action [to approve the use of GM plants] as soon as possible," said Michelle Vigna, Monsanto's product manager, in a statement cited by Reuters.
Dow AgroSciences, a global leader in pest management, made a supporting statement saying that American farmers were "one step closer to obtaining a critical tool needed to manage resistant and hard-to-control weeds," adding that a final decision is expected after a 30-day public review period, Agri Pulse newsletter reported Wednesday.
