DUBAI, August 10 (RIA Novosti) – The engine shutdown could have caused the crash of a passenger plane near the Tehran’s Mehrabad airport, Iran’s IRNA news agency reported Sunday.

The turboprop An-140 aircraft, owned by one of the local airlines, was en route from Tehran to the city of Tabas in eastern Iran.

According to other reports, the crashed plane was Iran-141 by Taban Airlines. The first Iran-140 built to carry up to 52 passengers on board was designed based on Russian An-140.

The airliner went down almost immediately after the takeoff Sunday morning near the international airport in the western district of Iranian capital. The plane crashed in the densely populated residential area. No casualties or damage have been reported yet.

An official from Iranian emergency service said all passengers and crew members, approximately 40 people, died in a crash.
