UNITED NATIONS, August 14 (RIA Novosti) - Amid violence and political turmoil in Libya, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon announced on Thursday the appointment of Bernardino León of Spain as his Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya.

Most recently, Leon has been European Union Special Representative for Libya. He will succeed Ban's current envoy, Tarek Mitri of Lebanon, on September 1.

The UN's announcement said that León previously held several positions with the Spanish government, including Secretary-General at the Spanish Prime Minister’s Office (2008-2011) and Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (2004-2008).

Leon also served as Personal Adviser to the European Union Special Representative for the Middle East Peace Process (1998-2001).

The UN Support Mission in Libya has been calling for a ceasefire, while the new Libyan Parliament there has called for the UN to assist with the protection of civilians and infrastructure. The UN Security Council is scheduled to meet on Libya later this month.
