UNITED NATIONS, August 15 (RIA Novosti) - After Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said his forces attacked Russian vehicles inside Ukraine, the United Nations on Friday said it could not verify the report and callef for both parties to resolve the conflict through dialogue.
“We are aware of the reports today in Ukraine which we cannot verify independently, and we will follow related developments very carefully. Such reports point to the urgent need for immediate de-escalation and resolution of the conflict through dialogue,” UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's Office of the Spokesperson said.
Ban Ki-moon spoke with Poroshenko on August 13 and, according to the United Nation's read-out, “reiterated the urgent need for redoubling political and diplomatic efforts toward a peaceful resolution.”
Under Secretary General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman canceled a previously announced trip to Ukraine and Moscow.
“We will most likely be able to announce a re-scheduling of that travel fairly quickly,” Ban's Spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in an earlier read-out.
