DONETSK (Rostov region), August 16 (RIA Novosti) - Red Cross will inspect every car of Russia’s humanitarian convoy to Ukraine while the cargo is on the Russian territory, the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) regional delegation Pascal Cuttat said Saturday.
“The inspection is agreed to take place here, at this border post,” Cuttat told journalists, adding that “the procedures with which this cargo will be inspected here at the border before anything can process have been agreed upon.”
Pascal Cuttat commended the efforts of Russian and Ukrainian delegations that spent hours discussing the processing of the humanitarian convoy which Russia sent to eastern Ukraine earlier this week.
“We are pleased to note, the ICRC, that the two governments and the representatives of the two sides here… have agreed on how to proceed in the sense of clearing, inspecting and preparing the goods and the convoys in order to eventually be able to bring the material, the humanitarian assistance into eastern Ukraine,” Cuttat noted.
He said, however that the major challenge now for the convoy to proceed into Ukrainian territory is ensuring security. Cuttat stressed that both sides to the Ukrainian conflict need to provide security guarantees, otherwise the convoy accompanied by the ICRC representatives would not be able to move.
Earlier today, Russian Foreign Ministry urged to immediately ensure safe passage of the humanitarian convoy, including a ceasefire.
