MOSCOW, August 16 (RIA Novosti) - Poland is considering the possibility of banning imports of Russian coal into the country, the newspaper Kommersant reported Saturday, with reference to Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski.
“We are thoroughly considering the possibility. There is nothing else I can say,” Sikorski was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
The talks about a possible ban of Russian coal imports to Poland started after Moscow introduced its food ban as a countermeasure to the sanctions imposed on Russia by the European Union.
On August 7, Russia imposed a ban on food imports from the countries that have launched sanctions against it. The decision was a response to Western sanctions applied against Russia concerning its alleged involvement in the independence movement in Ukraine.
The one-year food ban targets imports of beef, pork, fish, poultry, fruits, vegetables, nuts, as well as cheese and other dairy products from the European Union, the United States, Canada, Australia and Norway.
Poland finds itself among several other countries affected by the food ban, such as Latvia, Austria and Australia, who have expressed their concern about the negative effect the ban might have on their economies.
