KIEV, August 16 (RIA Novosti) - Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko held a phone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel to discuss the issues of a peaceful settlement of the crisis in eastern Ukraine and the president invited Merkel for an official visit to the country, the president’s press service said.
“The sides have discussed international efforts for peaceful settlement of the situation in Donbas. Petro Poroshenko invited Angela Merkel to visit Ukraine next week for a detailed discussion of the issues of mutual interest,” the press service said in a statement.
On Sunday, August 17, foreign ministers of Germany, France, Ukraine and Russia are expected to meet to discuss the situation in the crisis-hit country.
Since mid-April, Kiev has been conducting a military operation trying to suppress Luhansk and Donetsk regions, which refused to recognize the legitimacy of the country’s new government and chose to pursue independence.
