NEW YORK, August 21 (RIA Novosti) – UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon calls for a ceasefire to deliver humanitarian aid to residents of war-torn southeast Ukraine, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Thursday.
“The message that the Secretary General has talked about publicly, the message that the Undersecretary General Mr. [Jeffrey] Feltman is delivering in Ukraine, is for a negotiated ceasefire in diplomatic solution to be found so that aid could reach those who need it,” he told reporters.
Earlier in the day, the Russian Foreign Ministry called on the UN Security Council to make a statement about the need of a ceasefire in Ukraine to ensure safe delivery of Russian humanitarian aid.
A convoy of trucks carrying humanitarian cargo is currently undergoing customs checks on the Russian-Ukrainian border.
