Ukrainian customs officials have started inspecting the first four trucks carrying Russian humanitarian aid to eastern Ukraine, a representative from Russia’s Southern Customs Department told RIA Novosti Thursday.

DONETSK (Rostov Region), August 21 (RIA Novosti) — Ukrainian customs officials have started inspecting the first four trucks carrying Russian humanitarian aid to eastern Ukraine, a representative from Russia’s Southern Customs Department told RIA Novosti Thursday.

“The first four trucks are going through customs inspections," Rayan Farukshin said.

“At 3:00 p.m. Moscow time, [11:00 GMT], the first four trucks arrived at the line of customs control [in Ukraine]," a source at the Donetsk-Izvarino border crossing said.

Earlier in August, in light of the worsening civilian crisis in eastern Ukraine, Russia suggested sending an international humanitarian mission to the region under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

The convoy comprises 280 trucks carrying about 2,000 tons of humanitarian aid, including baby food, medicine, grain, sugar, sleeping bags and other necessities. The trucks set off from Moscow Region on August 12.
