MOSCOW, August 24 (RIA Novosti) - Californian Governor Edmund Brown released a statement Sunday declaring a state of emergency after a massive 6.1-magnitude earthquake caused scores of injuries and damages and knocked out power to almost 70,000 people.

The quake hit the Napa Valley about 10 miles northwest of American Canyon, with aftershocks that continued to destroy infrastructure, cause fires and close roads and railways, according to the official statement.

Gov. Brown ordered that “all agencies of the state government utilize and employ state personnel, equipment and facilities.”

Chief of the Napa Fire Department, John Callanan, said earlier the city had exhausted its own resources extinguishing fires, transporting the wounded, and combing debris for trapped residents.

The earthquake has reportedly injured 89 people, including two children and an adult who are said to be in critical condition.

The tremor was the strongest to hit the Bay Area since the 1989 Loma Prieta quake, which destroyed a section of the Bay Bridge, according to The New York Times.
