KIEV, August 28 (RIA Novosti) – Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has canceled his scheduled trip to Turkey and called an emergency meeting with the country’s Security Council over the situation in the Donetsk Region, the president’s press office said Thursday.
“I have decided to cancel my working visit to the Turkish Republic because of the sharp aggravation of the situation in the Donetsk region, particularly in Amvrosievka and Starobeshevo,” Poroshenko said.
The president claims that “Russian troops have entered Ukraine.”
The statement on Poroshenko’s official website also says that Ukraine will convene an urgent UN Security Council meeting.
"The world must provide an assessment of the sharp aggravation of the situation in Ukraine," Poroshenko added.
Today, Ukraine’s National Security and Defense council will hold a meeting to discuss subsequent actions amid the situation in country’s east.
Earlier today, Donetsk militia forces claimed taking control of checkpoints and strongholds in the outskirts of Mariupol in southeastern Ukraine
On August 24, the Donetsk People’s Republic’s (DPR) independence forces began moving south to the Sea of Azov on the Russian-Ukrainian border. Three days later, the DPR claimed they had moved tanks into Novoazovsk on the Sea of Azov.
In April, Kiev launched a military operation against the independence supporters in eastern Ukraine, which has lasted until now.
More than 2,000 people have been killed and more than 5,000 injured since the operation began, according to UN figures.
