MOSCOW, August 30 (RIA Novosti) - Twenty workers from a gold mine in Nicaragua have been rescued after having been trapped following a cave-in in the village of El Comal; four people remain trapped, Agence France-Presse reported Saturday.
“You can hear that there are people alive because we heard voices,” local ruling party official Martha Lagos was quoted as saying.
The collapse happened early Thursday and has been blamed on heavy rain. But, according to Lagos, word of the cave-in only emerged in the evening because the site is so remote.
One person was killed and his body was seen being recovered.
All the miners are said to be freelancers. Freelance mining is legal in Nicaragua, allowing the people of the poorest country in Latin America to profit from the industry.
