MOSCOW, September 1 (RIA Novosti) – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Italian counterpart Federica Mogherini have discussed by phone the ongoing effort to find optimal solutions to the Ukrainian crisis, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Monday.
“Separate topical issues on the international agenda were raised [during the talks], including the crisis in Ukraine from the perspective of searching for optimal political solutions,” the ministry’s statement reads.
The southeast of Ukraine has been under fire since mid-April, when Kiev launched a special military operation aimed at suppressing independence supporters who refused to recognize the legitimacy of the new Kiev’s government after the February coup.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has stressed the importance of international consultations in finding a political solution to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
According to the latest UN estimates, almost 2,600 people have died since the Kiev’s military operation started, and about 6,000 have been injured.
