MOSCOW, September 2 (RIA Novosti) - All over the world, more people are watching online child pornography than ever before, and the victims are getting younger, according to non-governmental organization Save the Children Denmark.
“Child pornography is becoming more and more extreme… Not only it is more violent, but the age of the victims is getting lower. We see videos of very young children in nursery who are being sexually assaulted,” a psychologist from Save the Children Kuno Sorensen said as quoted by the Danish Broadcasting Corporation.
Save the Children Denmark operates a hotline for people to report websites containing child pornography.
According to the Copenhagen post, the number of alerts has risen significantly, from 2,385 in 2011 to 3,167 in 2013.
Denmark’s East Jutland regional police suspects an average of 15 people a year in the area of being in possession of child pornography and sharing it with others online, however it is clear that the real number is hugely underestimated.
Child pornography is one of the fastest growing businesses online, with an estimated annual revenue of $3 billion, the Huffington Post reported.
According to the Russian Interior Ministry that launched an international operation to identify the distributors of child pornography, the majority of such lawbreakers were located in the United States (927 users out of the 3,700 identified).
Other figures shown that 501 identified users were from Brazil, 398 users from Germany, 266 from France, 249 from Great Britain, and 215 from Canada.
According to the Ministry’s statement, criminal cases have been opened against the offenders, and there have already been some convictions.
Child pornography is illegal and censored in most countries in the world. Both, distribution and possession are criminal offenses in almost all Western states.
