BAGHDAD, September 4 (RIA Novosti) – Another powerful explosion rocked downtown Baghdad’s Naser Square on Thursday evening, leaving an unknown number of people dead or injured, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported.

Eyewitnesses said they saw dead and injured in the blast, that occurred near the Green Zone.

Iraqi TV reported that "dozens" were killed or wounded in two car bomb explosions in the Iraqi capital.

The first car bomb blast left 12 people dead and injured another 30, according to Western media reports.

The first blast struck an area full of shops and restaurants in Kadhimiyah in northern Baghdad.

The second explosion occurred in the central Baghdad’s district of Karrada. According to the Iraqi officials, at least 6 people were killed in a blast, and 17 wounded, however the exact number of causalities is still unknown.

Areas, populated by Shiites, often become a target of jihadists’ attacks in Iraq. Over the past months, jihadists have gained control over large parts of the country, with Iraqi government struggling to regain control over the territories occupied by terrorists.

The radical jihadist group Islamic State that currently operates in Iraq targets anyone, who has different faith to their own, posing a threat to all communities in the region, including Shias, Sunnis, Kurds, Christians, and others.
