DUSHANBE, September 5 (RIA Novosti) - The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has proven its effectiveness in the short period it has been operating, Russian Ambassador to Tajikistan Igor Lyakin-Frolov said Friday.
“SCO member states are interested in strengthening the organization, which during its short existence has proved to be a serious institution, contributing to the formation of a safe and stable structure," Lyakin-Frolov said at the round table titled “the place of Tajikistan in the process of formation and development of the SCO” in Tajik capital Dushanbe.
The diplomat noted that attracting new members to the organization is a positive trend, as it will increase the influence and power of SCO.
He also praised the high standard of Tajikistan’s presidency in the organization, saying that the country has been guiding SCO in a very creative and dynamic way.
“I have seen reports on various activities within the organization held this year in China, Tajikistan and other countries. The constructive contribution of our Tajik partners was a constant presence,” Lyakin-Frolov added.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization was founded in 2001 by the leaders of Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Its observer states include Afghanistan, India, Iran, Mongolia and Pakistan.
Tajikistan is the chair of SCO from September 2013 till September 2014.
