NEWPORT, September 5 (RIA Novosti) – NATO and Ukraine did not discuss the possibility of the Eastern European country’s membership in the military alliance, a NATO official said Friday.

“In regard to membership, no, that question wasn’t raided and wasn’t discussed,” the official said on conditions of anonymity.

On Wednesday, the Ukrainian government approved legislation to change the country’s “non-bloc” status and begin efforts to join NATO. Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said that the country wants to receive a special status between Ukraine and NATO.

Kiev’s position on NATO membership has fluctuated through the years, as previous President Viktor Yanukovych saw Ukraine as a nonaligned state, while his predecessor Viktor Yushchenko strived for membership in the alliance. In 2008, NATO declined Ukraine’s application to join the organization.

NATO regulations do not allow countries involved in territorial disputes to become members of the organization, currently the case as Ukraine refuses to acknowledge Crimea’s reunification with Russia.
