MOSCOW, September 7 (RIA Novosti) – The regime change policy that the United States has been conducting in countries it regards as unfavorable has the most detrimental consequences, as seen in Libya and Iraq, according to Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Vitaly Churkin.

“Libya and Iraq are good examples where Americans left basically leaving their work unfinished. They came to change the regime, but if you’re conducting a regime change, prepare a new regime, make sure that this new regime is capable of solving the problems that the country is facing. This confirms the claim that we have made several times, in this room included, that such rough geopolitical engineering, changing regimes without looking into the possible consequences, has the most dire consequences,” Churkin told the Rossiya 1 TV channel Sunday.

The Russian Ambassador to the UN noted that the most troubling example of the US regime change policy is the situation in Iraq, where the Islamic State (IS) militants have intensified their attacks.

The IS insurgent group, previously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS or ISIL), has been fighting the Syrian government since 2012.

In 2014, the organization launched an offensive on Iraq, capturing vast areas in the north of the country, proclaiming an Islamic caliphate on the territories under its control and forcing thousands of members of Iraqi religious minorities to flee.

In August, US President Barack Obama authorized airstrikes against IS positions in Iraq as part of an operation, which, according Obama, is aimed at protecting American personnel in the capital of Iraq’s Kurdistan Region Irbil, as well as preventing the “genocide" of Iraqi religious minorities.
