Iraqi Prime Minister Pledges to Eliminate Contradictions Between Baghdad, Kurdistan
Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi, appointed in early August, said Monday during the parliament session that one of the strategic goals of the new cabinet is to settle disputes between the country’s central government and the regional government of Iraqi Kurdistan.
BAGHDAD, September 9 (RIA Novosti) - Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi, appointed in early August, said Monday during the parliament session that one of the strategic goals of the new cabinet is to settle disputes between the country’s central government and the regional government of Iraqi Kurdistan.
Iraqi parliament session dedicated to the appointment of the cabinet of ministers was broadcast live by the country’s state television.
“My government pledges to eliminate the existing contradictions with the government of Iraqi Kurdistan,” Abadi said.
Authorities of Iraqi Kurdistan, an autonomous region in the north of Iraq, accuse Baghdad of in the unjust distribution of oil revenues and demand higher salaries for the civil servants in the region, the level of which is significantly lower than the national average.
In August, the Kurdistan Parliament also approved the establishment of an electoral commission in the region and the commission to conduct a referendum on the status of the region and the disputed territories, which caused discontent of Iraqi central government.
