MOSCOW, September 8 (RIA Novosti) – Claims by the Ukrainian authorities regarding potential US weapon supplies to Ukraine are inaccurate, the White House National Security Council (NSC) spokesperson Caitlin Hayden told RIA Novosti Monday.
“These reports are not accurate. Ukraine has made a variety of requests for additional security assistance and we are reviewing all of them to see how we can further support Ukraine,” Hayden said.
Hayden noted that since March 2014, “the United States has announced over $60 million in non-lethal security assistance to help Ukraine address instability, maintain its territorial integrity, and reform its defense institutions.”
On Sunday, advisor to the Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, Yuri Lutsenko, said that agreements to supply advanced weapons to Ukraine from several countries, including the United States, France and Poland had been reached at the September 4-5 NATO summit in Wales.
Ukraine has been embroiled in violent internal conflict since mid-April, when Kiev began a military operation against independence supporters in the southeastern regions of the country.
On September 5, representatives from Ukraine, Russia and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) agreed to a ceasefire between Kiev and independence supporters at the meeting of the Contact Group on Ukraine in Minsk.
The ceasefire commenced at 15:00 GMT the same day.
