MOSCOW, September 10 (RIA Novosti) - The spread of the Ebola virus poses a serious threat to the existence of Liberia, Reuters reported, citing National Defense Minister Brownie Samukai.
"Liberia is facing a serious threat to its national existence. The deadly Ebola virus has caused a disruption of the normal functioning of our State," Samukai said at a meeting of the UN Security Council. He added that the virus is "spreading like wild fire and devouring everything in its path."
The Ebola virus has “overwhelmed” the normal functioning of the already weak health system in Liberia, the minister said. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Liberia suffered from fever more than any other African country. Over a thousand people died since the beginning of the outbreak.
On Tuesday, the WHO declared that the number of Ebola victims has reached 2296 people, 4293 have been infected. On the whole, the Ebola virus continues to spread in West Africa.
The cases of infection have already been registered in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Senegal.
Ebola virus mortality rate is 53 percent. There is no officially approved medication for the disease, and experts claim prevention is the only cure. Several countries, including Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Japan are currently working on vaccines.
