MOSCOW, September 9 (RIA Novosti) – Russia’s early warning missile system tracked on Tuesday the launch of a ballistic missile from the Mediterranean Sea toward Israel, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov said.

“The radar fixed the launch of a ballistic target in the Mediterranean Sea at 12:31 Moscow time [08:31 GMT],” Konashenkov said.

The trajectory of the missile originated from the central region of the Mediterranean Sea and headed toward the eastern shores. The suspected target was suspected of landing some 300 kilometers to the north of Tel Aviv.

On August 26, Israel and the Palestinians agreed on an open-ended ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. All previous ceasefire agreements were unconditional and limited in time.

With the new truce, Israel promised to open its border crossings to allow humanitarian aid and construction materials to enter Gaza, and is to extend the permitted fishing zone to 6 miles off the Gaza coast.

On July 8, Israel launched Operation Protective Edge against the Hamas movement in response to the group’s rocket attacks. On July 17, Israel switched to a ground offensive to destroy the network of tunnels dug by Palestinian militants along Gaza’s Israeli border.

More than 2,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have lost their lives to the conflict in Gaza since July 8.

The Israeli death toll stands at 72 people – 65 soldiers and 7 civilians.
