WASHINGTON, September 10 (RIA Novosti) - US House Speaker John Boehner invited the Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to address a joint meeting of Congress on September 18, the official said in a statement, distributed by his press service Wednesday.
“Having President Poroshenko address Congress is another signal of our steadfast commitment to the aspirations of his people. It will be an honor and a privilege to welcome him to the United States Capitol,” the statement reads.
Petro Poroshenko is to become the second Ukrainian leader to address the US Congress. Ukraine’s President Viktor Yushchenko spoke before the Congress’s joint meeting in April 2005.
Poroshenko's visit to Washington is scheduled at September 18, by invitation of the US President Barack Obama. The leaders are expected to discuss efforts to pursue a diplomatic resolution of the conflict between the Ukrainian government and pro-independence forces of the country’s southeastern regions, according to the White House press service.
