WASHINGTON, September 11 (RIA Novosti) -Washington does not have information who is behind the chemical attacks in Syria, US Secretary of State John Kerry told journalists.
“We do not have detailed information about specifically who issued an order, as we did on August the 21st event. We do not have specific information about what entity delivered it,” Kerry said on Wednesday.
According to Kerry, the United States has circumstantial evidence, showing that “some players within that [Syrian President Bashar Assad’s] regime have been using chlorine in a form that amounts to a chemical agent, contrary to the ban under the chemical convention treaty.”
Talking about possibility of changes in the US strategy in Syria, Kerry has noted that currently the United States is looking “for a greater degree of detail with respect to any potential actions.”
On Wednesday, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) said that chlorine gas was used “systematically and repeatedly” earlier this year in northern Syria. However, OPCW had no information on who was using the toxic chemical.
The fact-finding mission was appointed by OPCW Director-General Ahmet Uzumcu in April 2014 to examine alleged uses of chlorine gas as a weapon in Syria. Syrian government blames Jabhat al-Nusra, a radical group linked to al-Qaeda, for carrying out the attacks.
