MOSCOW, September 11 (RIA Novosti) - Half of Europeans are against US interference in their international policies, the 13th Transatlantic Trends survey by The German Marshall Fund reveals.
"Fifty percent of Europeans said they would prefer to see their country take a more independent approach from the United States, up 8 percentage points from last year," reads the statement published on the fund's website on Wednesday.
The survey, which also showed that the majority of Americans (53%) disapprove of President Barack Obama's international policies, had the most notable response registered in Germany, where 57 percent of the population expressed a strong preference for such an approach in security and diplomatic affairs that would as independent from the United States as possible.
According to the survey, 73 percent of the European citizenry believe the EU is not doing enough to curb the economic crisis.
Sixty-five percent labeled it as beneficial that their countries are members of the EU, while 28 percent considered it to be bad, with the highest numbers opposing received in Greece (42%), the UK (40%), Italy (36%) and Portugal (36%). That EU membership is bad was voiced by 45 percent of the respondents who believe the EU has been detrimental to their national economy.
The survey also questioned on the UK's membership of the EU, which lead to a majority of 51 percent believing that the rest of the EU should do more to accommodate the UK's concerns. Thirty-eight percent, however, thought that the UK should exit the union. The UK's membership of the EU was most largely opposed to in France, where 52 percent of the respondents said the UK should leave.
The 13th Transatlantic Trends survey by the German Marshall Fund and the Compagnia di San Paolo was carried out in ten EU member states: France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
