MOSCOW, September 12 (RIA Novosti) - Members of the European Parliament have once again become subordinates to US interests and that is intensifying the conflict with Russia, Aymeric Chauprade, MEP from the French National Front Party told Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency on Friday.
"The European Union has become a Registration Chamber for US geopolitics. Members of the European Parliament are again subject to the interests of the Americans, who make them vote for their own needs, which exacerbates the rift between Europe and Russia," Chauprade said.
"I think this is all a provocation… We need to work alongside Russia, to seek peace and equality in our relationship. Ukraine can become a major contributor to this and should not be a source of additional tension," the politician said.
The Foreign Affairs Committee recommended that the European Parliament approve the Association Agreement with Ukraine and the formation of a deep and complete free trade zone.
Commenting on the news, Chauprade said that "we are promoting the agreement, which is an element of gradual entry into NATO. That is, we are talking about a very serious and even belligerent decision, which will only aggravate the existing tensions."
Elaborating, the lawmaker said that "at present, the European Union exists not as an independent strategic alliance, but is a subordinate to the United States… The Foreign Affairs Committee, as is perfectly clear, is also for the most part subordinate to the US interests, and there are few people who choose to oppose them."
These parties "follow the logic of war, the sanctions logic, the logic of confrontation with Russia and its isolation," Chauprade said.
The European Union and the United States have ratcheted up sanctions on Moscow over its alleged support for independence supporters in eastern Ukraine and a conflict that has claimed some 3,000 lives since April. Russia denies military involvement in Ukraine and says sanctions are counter-productive.
Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday that Moscow regrets the European Union's decision to impose new sanctions against Russia, stressing that Brussels is failing to see the reality of the situation in eastern Ukraine and the steps both sides are taking toward peace.
