In its statement the Kunming court said there were eight people behind the attack, four of whom were shot at the site.
The other four on trial - three men with shaved heads and a woman – were arrested while attempting to cross China's border.
The three men, whose names were transliterated as Iskandar Ehet, Turgun Tohtunyaz and Hasayn Muhammad were sentenced to death for “leading and organizing a terror group, and intentional homicide”.
The woman, called Patigul Tohti, was accused of "taking part in a terror group and intentional homicide” and was sentenced to life in prison.
The Chinese government blamed Islamic extremists from the western region of Xinjiang for the assault
