MOSCOW, September 14 (RIA Novosti) -The British Foreign Office is working to verify the video posted online, where militants of the Islamic State (IS) execute a British journalist, David Haines, BBC reported on Sunday.
"We are aware of the video. We are working urgently to verify the content," the Foreign Office said in a statement released Saturday night.
The video of the execution of a British citizen David Haines by IS militants appeared on the website of the Search for International Terrorist Entities (SITE) Institute. The authenticity of the video has not yet been confirmed. The video appeared online the day after Haines' family asked IS militants late Friday to contact them.
David Haines, a 44-year-old British citizen, was captured in Syria in 2013. According to The Guardian, Haynes had been on a humanitarian mission in Syria only for three days at the time of the abduction.
British Prime Minister David Cameron called the execution of Haines "an act of pure evil" and promised to do everything in his power to catch the killers and submit them to the court . An emergency meeting has been scheduled for Sunday morning. The British Foreign Office is offering every support possible to Haines' family.
IS militants killed two US hostages in recent weeks, posting video evidence on the internet and threatened to kill Haines during a video showing the execution of US journalist Steven Sotloff earlier this month. The jihadist group also killed US journalist, James Foley, last month and has vowed to execute another British citizen, Alan Henning.
The Islamic State, known for proclaiming hardline Islamic fundamentalism, has been fighting the Syrian government since 2012. In 2014, it seized vast areas across Iraq and Syria and proclaimed an Islamic caliphate on the seized territories, forcing thousands members of religious minorities to flee. Up to 50,000 militants are believed to be fighting for the IS.
