MOSCOW, September 15 (RIA Novosti) - Russian government will send delegation led by the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov to the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples in New York, said the statement, published on official website on Monday.

“To send from 20 to 25 September 2014 to the city of New York (USA) the delegation of Russian Federation led by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Gennady Gatilov to participate in the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples,” reads the document.

On December 21, 2010, the United Nations’ General Assembly decided to organize a high-level plenary meeting, to be known as the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples, in order to share perspectives and best practices on the realization of the rights of indigenous peoples, including pursuing the objectives of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

This year, the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples will be held on September 22 and in the afternoon of September 23 in New York. The Conference will result in “a concise, action-oriented outcome document, prepared on the basis of inclusive and open informal consultations with Member States and indigenous peoples.”

According to United Nations’ figures, indigenous peoples, comprising more than 5,000 distinct groups in about 90 countries, make up some five percent of the world’s population.
