UNITED NATIONS, September 15 (RIA Novosti) - After an improvised explosive device hit a UN vehicle in Mali, killing one and injuring four, the United Nations called on the government of Mali to launch investigation and bring those guilty to justice.

The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a Press Statement on Sunday calling “on the Government of Mali to swiftly investigate this attack and bring the perpetrators to justice,” stressing that “those responsible for the attack shall be held accountable.”

The Security Council members reiterated their “support for MINUSMA [United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali] to assist the Malian authorities and the Malian people in their efforts to bring lasting peace and stability to their country.”

The Security Council's statement “condemned in the strongest terms the attack on a military vehicle in the vicinity of Aguelhok, Mali, on 14 September 2014, in which one Chadian peacekeeper of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali was killed and four other peacekeepers were injured.”

The council also reaffirmed the need to fight threats to the international peace and security caused by terrorist attacks, pointing out that any act of terrorism is “criminal and unjustifiable,” irrespective of the motivation and the circumstances of such an act.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, condemning the same attack earlier in Sudan, cited “another attack in the Kidal Region on September 2 that killed four peacekeepers and wounded 14 others.”

Back on August 16, Ban condemned the killing by a suicide bomber of two UN peacekeepers and the injuring of at least seven others in a suicide attack in Ber in Mali’s Timbuktu region.

In June also in Aguelhok, four UN peacekeepers were killed.
