MOSCOW, September 16 (RIA Novosti) – The first batch of the newest nuclear fuel pellets, which are to be used in atomic energetics of the future, have been produced on Rosatom’s Mining and Chemical Facility in Zheleznogorsk, Krasnoyarsk Region, the facility stated in a Tuesday press-release.
“The first batch of MOX [mixed oxide] fuel tablets-10 kilograms, was produced by industrial equipment at the Mining and Chemical Facility [Rosatom State Corporation’s enterprise] in a specially created unit,” the facility stated.
This is the first time in history that the mining and chemical facility has produced this type of fuel for fast-neutron reactors.
Nuclear power station units with fast-neutron reactors will substantially enhance the fuel base of nuclear energetics and minimize radioactive waste due to what is known as a closed nuclear fuel cycle. Fast reactor technology is developed in very few countries, and Russia is a world leader in this field.
Zheleznogorsk Mining and Chemical Facility is Russia's leading company in this field, dealing with the creation of a complete technological complex in the sphere of spent nuclear fuel management and the closed nuclear fuel cycle.
