MOSCOW, September 18 (RIA Novosti) – Residents of New York, London, Amsterdam, and other cities around the world, will participate in the People's Climate March scheduled for Sunday, September 21, ahead of the UN climate summit which will take place in New York on September 23.
"We must take the action necessary to create a world with an economy that works for people and the planet - now. In short, we want a world safe from the ravages of climate change," the organizers of the march said as quoted by the Ecologist.
"Our demand is for action, not words," the organizers stressed, noting, however, that the climate issues the world currently faces cannot be resolved in one meeting.
"We know that no single meeting or summit will 'solve climate change' and in many ways this moment will not even really be about the summit," the organizers said.
The People's Climate March has been endorsed by over 1,200 organizations representing 100 million people worldwide and is organized by more than a dozen environmental, labor and social justice groups.
On Tuesday, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced that he would join the march. On the same day Ban Ki-moon appointed Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio as a United Nations Messenger of Peace with a special focus on climate change.
DiCaprio joins 11 other UN Messengers of Peace and one Goodwill Ambassador and is expected to address the UN Climate Summit called by Ban Ki-moon.
The summit will be attended by US President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron and scores of other heads of state and government officials from around the world, who are expected to discuss ways of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The talks come in preparation for a meeting in Paris next year, which could result in governments signing a new global climate agreement.
