EDINBURGH, September 19 (RIA Novosti) - North Lanarkshire has voted to become independent from the United Kingdom, with 51.1 percent of "yes" votes against 48.9 percent of "no" votes.
As many as 115,783 voters chose a future outside the union, while 110,922 Scots preferred to stay. The turnout in the council area was 84.4 percent.
Meanwhile, South Lanarkshire supported the "no" campaign with 54.7 percent (121,800) against 45.3 percent (100,990), and a turnout of 85.4.
Results from nine council areas are still pending, including the nation's capital city of Edinburgh.
