EDINBURGH, September 19 (RIA Novosti), Mark Hirst – The leader of the UK Labour Party, Ed Miliband, said in the early hours of Friday the Scottish independence referendum has taught the rest of the UK a "lesson in democracy".

"Wonderful to hear of 80/90 percent turnouts in Scottish independence referendum. Scots have taught us all a lesson in democracy," Miliband used Twitter to write.

Miliband's comment came as the first confirmed turnout figures were released for some regions of Scotland.

Turnout in Dundee, Scotland's fourth-largest city after Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, reached an unprecedented 90 percent. Glasgow, the biggest city of Scotland, is 87 percent.

At 10 p.m. local time (9:00 GMT), referendum polls closed at 5,579 voting stations in 32 councils across Scotland, with official results expected to be announced between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. local time on Friday.

If the majority of Scots vote for independence, then on March 24, 2016 Scotland will secede from the United Kingdom.
