MOSCOW, September 21 (RIA Novosti) - The European Union welcomes the agreement on the formation of the national unity government in Afghanistan, according to a statement published by the European Union on Sunday.
"We welcome the political agreement reached between Dr. Abdullah Abdullah and Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai to form a government of national unity," the statement said.
"We look forward to cooperating closely with the new Afghan government to implement urgently the reforms needed on a path towards prosperity and peace," the statement read.
The statement added that it was time for the people of Afghanistan to unite in the face of Afghanistan's severe economic and security challenges.
Presidential candidates, former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah and former Finance Minister Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, signed a power-sharing agreement on Sunday, according to which the latter will be the president, while the former will become the chief executive officer.
On July 7, the preliminary results of the second round of elections were announced, marking Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai as the winner, with Abdullah Abdullah saying the results had been falsified. During a visit to Kabul last month, US Secretary of State John Kerry brokered a deal paving the way for a full audit of votes in Afghanistan.
