MOSCOW, September 22 (RIA Novosti) - Two Electricite du Liban (EDL) contract workers threatened on Monday to kill themselves in protest of delayed salary payments outside of the Royal Tower building near the EDL's headquarters in the capital of Lebanon, Arab broadcasting network LBCI reported.
One of the employees threatened to light himself on fire while other began cutting himself with a knife, the network reported. The EDL workers have taken the drastic measures as a response to unsuccessful meetings between the EDL committee and company service providers over the ongoing salary payment delays.
The head of the EDL committee, Lebnan Makhoul, told LBCI that workers' demands to be paid their salaries are a "sacred right."
EDL contract workers have been staging protests since July over the state-run company's refusal to offer them full-time employment. Although the company's cabinet agreed to grant full-time employment to 891 workers after holding examinations in August, the workers have continued to push the company to comply with their demands entirely.
