EDINBURGH, September 23 (RIA Novosti) – Lord Smith of Kelvin, who was charged by the UK Government to oversee the devolution of more powers to Scotland, has warned that securing a deal between the different political parties "will not be easy".
"My job is to create a process through which agreement is reached, but I cannot force an agreement. It will not be easy; it will require positive intent, courage and compromise from all parties. But I have confidence that our political leaders will rise to the challenge and I look forward to working with them," Smith said speaking at the Scottish Parliament.
He also announced the details of a special commission, to be known as the Smith Commission, which will establish the remit of the process of devolving more powers to Scotland.
Scottish voters took part in a referendum on independence on September 18 and opted by a margin of 55 percent to 45 percent (2,001,926 votes to 1,617,989) to remain the part of the UK.
Just before the referendum took place YouGov opinion poll service reported that Yes side managed to gain the majority of votes for the first time, which prompted the British government to promise more devolution and wider autonomy to Scotland in case it chooses to stay within the United Kingdom.
