MOSCOW, September 24 (RIA Novosti) — Former President of France Nicolas Sarkozy blames the country's current leader Francois Hollande for dividing French society over the same-sex marriage law, adviser to Sarkozy, French sociology professor, Yvan Blot told Rossiya Segodnya on Wednesday.
"Nicolas Sarkozy said that he thinks, Hollande is guilty for dividing French civil society by imposing, with the help of the socialist majority, this law on marriages for all, which has provoked huge protests," Yvan Blot said in an interview.
Blot added that Sarkozy stands for respecting family values and that he wants to restore attitudes towards the traditional marriage without persecuting anyone. "This means that there will be no persecution of homosexuals," he concluded.
Blot also said that in his view, the question of gay marriage should be put to a referendum, as this issue concerns the moral fabric of society, so every Frenchman should have a say on it. He added that Sarkozy mentioned that he thinks holding many referendums is important.
Same-sex marriage was made legal in France in May 2013, during the presidency of Francois Hollande.
Nicolas Sarkozy held the office of a French president from 2007-2012. Last week Sarkozy announced that he aims to run for the country's top position once again.
