UNITED NATIONS, September 24 (RIA Novosti) – The strategy against the Islamic State (IS), also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), must involve Arab states, UK Prime Minister David Cameron said Thursday.
"Our strategy must work in tandem with Arab states," Cameron told the UN Security Council, noting that the strategy should be "in line with our legal obligations" and should be part of a plan that "involves our aid, our diplomacy and, yes, our military."
"We need to act and we need to act now," Cameron stressed.
On Wednesday, Cameron said the British parliament will debate UK involvement in airstrikes against IS targets in Iraq. If the parliament approves the military intervention, Britain could join the United States and France in fighting the IS insurgents in Iraq this weekend.
The Unites States carried out a number of airstrikes against IS positions in Syria on Tuesday and the airstrikes reportedly continued on Wednesday.
US President Barack Obama unveiled a strategy for defeating the IS on September 10. The plan includes forming an international coalition against the IS radical Sunni organization, which has been fighting against the Syrian government since 2012, launching first attacks in Iraq in June, 2014.
Obama's plan also includes authorizing US airstrikes against IS positions in Syria, while simultaneously continuing airstrikes in Iraq, which the United States authorized in August.
