LONDON, September 24 (RIA Novosti) - The British parliament will debate on September 26 UK involvement in airstrikes against the Islamic State (IS) targets in Iraq, Prime Minister David Cameron said Wednesday.
“I have requested that Parliament be recalled to debate the UK response to the Iraqi Govt's request for support against ISIL... The Speaker has accepted my request to recall Parliament on Friday,” Cameron wrote on Twitter.
If the parliament approves the military intervention, Britain could join the United States and France in fighting the IS insurgents in Iraq this weekend.
Earlier this month, the United States unveiled its strategy to defeat the establishing a multinational coalition against the jihadist group.
The IS, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS), is a Sunni group that has been fighting the Syrian government since 2012. In June 2014, the group launched attacks in northern and western Iraq, announcing the establishment of a caliphate on the territories under its control.
