UNITED NATIONS, September 24 (RIA Novosti) – The poisonous ideology of extremism, which is the main cause of the Islamic State (IS) threat, must be defeated, UK Prime Minister David Cameron told the UN Security Council Thursday.
"We must defeat the poisonous ideology of extremism that is the root cause of this [IS] threat," Cameron said, adding that any strategy against the IS extremist group should aim to support local populations.
On Wednesday, Cameron said the British parliament will debate on September 26 UK involvement in airstrikes against IS targets in Iraq. If the parliament approves the military intervention, Britain could join the United States and France in fighting the IS insurgents in Iraq this weekend.
The Unites States carried out a number of airstrikes against IS positions in Syria on Tuesday, using aircraft, drones and Tomahawk missiles. Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates also reportedly took part in the attacks.
The airstrikes reportedly continued on Wednesday.
US President Barack Obama unveiled a strategy for defeating the IS on September 10. The plan includes forming an international coalition to fight the radical organization and authorizing US airstrikes against IS positions in Syria, while simultaneously continuing airstrikes in Iraq, which the United States authorized in August.
The IS, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), is a radical Sunni jihadist group that has been fighting against the Syrian government since 2012. In June 2014, the group extended its attacks to northern and western Iraq.
Ceasing vast territories in both countries and forcing thousands of people, mostly religious minorities, to flee, the IS declared a caliphate on all the territories under its control.
