MOSCOW, September 24 (RIA Novosti) – The United Nations Security Council on Wednesday unanimously adopted a US-drafted resolution on foreign terrorist fighters.

The resolution “condemns the violent extremism, which can be conducive to terrorism, and sectarian violence and the commission of terrorist acts by foreign terrorist fighters, and demands that all foreign terrorist fighters withdraw immediately from all zones of armed conflict and cease all terrorist acts.”

Chairing the UN Security Council meeting titled “Threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts,” US President Barack Obama said this “historic resolution” established new obligations that nations must follow in order to prevent terrorists from procuring arms or moving through their territories.

He also called on the nations to adopt domestic laws for the prosecution of those who allow for the movement or armament of foreign terrorist fighters.

The US president cited some of the key points enshrined in the resolution, including the provision to share information about the travelling and activities of terrorist fighters.

He also stressed the role of propaganda in the ability of terrorist networks to efficiently recruit fighters, including youths, and said this propaganda must be counted by the brutality of evidence from those who had actually been part of those networks.

The US president said that in propaganda, terrorist organizations were targeting youths who became discontented with their countries and opportunities that were open to them. In this regard, Obama urged to address the conditions conductive to the spread of radicalism. He also pointed out that the majority of those slaughtered by radicals are Muslims in local communities.

Barack Obama also mentioned that the United States would “continue to pursue a political solution in Syria” to see to it that all people in that country lived in security, dignity and peace.

In conclusion, Obama underscored that there was no military solution to the problem of global terrorism and urged united anti-terrorist push from all nations, stressing that “resolutions alone will not be enough, promises on paper cannot keep us safe.”

“All of you are committed to this urgent work will find a strong and steady partner in the United States,” Obama said.
