Ukraine hopes to be granted a "special" Non-NATO US ally status in November, Ukrainian Foreign Affairs Ministry representative Yevhen Perebiynis said in an interview with the 112 Ukraine television channel.

KIEV, September 24 (RIA Novosti) – Ukraine hopes to be granted a "special" Non-NATO US ally status in November, Ukrainian Foreign Affairs Ministry representative Yevhen Perebiynis said in an interview with the 112 Ukraine television channel.

"It is pre-election period in the United States, so the Senate, which could make such a decision [like decide on the status of Ukraine] is not expected to hold any meeting <…>. We expect that in November the Senate will be able to adopt such a resolution as a whole," Perebiynis said Tuesday.

According to him, the issue of the "special" status of the United States' non-NATO allies has not yet been removed from the agenda because the Senate has yet to vote on the resolution.

"This issue is not completely removed from the agenda. Because the Senate committee made this decision," Perebiynis said.

On September 18, soon after a meeting with US President Barack Obama, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko told journalists that his American counterpart "said no" to his plea for Ukraine's "special" security status outside the military bloc. Poroshenko made an emotional plea to the US Congress in a bid to convince lawmakers that Ukraine was "on the forefront of the fight for democracy" and needed strong US support, including a special status within NATO and supplies of heavy weapons.
